Paving Guide

1. Mark out the area and dig out to the required total depth. Tap in the wooden pegs to show levels for the finished surface, including the required gradients. Gradients should be 1:40 or steeper, towards adequate drainage. 2. Remove turf or existing surface and dispose of. 3. Dig out soil to correct depth. We recommend 75-100mm of compacted MOT Type 1 Base material and then a 30mm full mortar bed at a mix of 4:1 sharp sand and cement.

4. Spread MOT over the area slightly higher than finished MOT height. 5. Compact the area using a plate compactor. Available to hire from local hire centre. 6. Mix up a wet mortar mix of 4:1 sharp sand and cement and lay across 30mm thick. If laying natural stone allow for the varying thickness of slabs.

7. Gently lower the slabs onto the bed. Tapping it down to the required level with a rubber hammer. 8. Using a spirit level check the fall is correct and the slabs are going in the direction of fall. 9. Use a damp mortar mix of 4:1 building sand and cement. Press firmly into joints to form a dense, impervious surface that will drain water across the paving. Sweep away surplus when it starts to dry and turn to powder.

10. Do not walk on paving for at least 24 hours. During the frosty weather, cover the paving for protection until mortar had cured. Then point as soon as possible avoiding days when raining or rain expected. If you need to cut slabs, use a power tool with a blade suitable for the paving type. These can be hired from a local hire centre. *When using tools and equipment follow all health and safety precautions, don't forget slabs are heavy and lifted wrongly can cause injury.
